Pretty hard quiz, but fun. You misspelled rival and cultivated.

I'd really like more time. I was just starting to catch on and figure them out when time ran out. Maybe 5 or 6 minutes.

Warships and worships are not homophones in my dialect. "War.." ryhmes with "door", and "wor..." ryhmes with "purr".

@janiac: Oddly enough your comment was one politician's exact response to allowing gays in the military.

In Standard American English "worships" and "warships" are not the same at all, neither are "bizarre" and "bazaar." worships - wɜrʃɪps warships - wɔrʃɪps bizarre - bɪzɑr bazaar - bəzɑr They're tricky and sometimes it's a dialectical thing that different sounds get melded together, but where I'm from not only these but 'discussed' and 'disgust' are pretty easily distinguishable. Also, in British RP, 'hostile' and 'hostel' will be really different, too.

Yes...we all know accents are different. The only question is, "Can you answer the clue?" What good does it do to keep pointing out how different words can sound? We can debate it forever and get nowhere.

A bit more time would be nice. A lot of these take a while to think about...

The thing is, I don't think it's a proper homophone if it can be pronounced differently in different accents. Shouldn't we then be accepting word pairs like "pawn - porn" as well? And "fax - facts" shouldn't even be discussed, ugh.

This was really fun! Of course, some I never would have gotten because of my accent. You're going to get a lot of debate (it's already started), but I figure, if it's a dictionary-supported pronunciation, use it, cite it, and tell the nay-sayers to shove off.

Base bass? Anyways, great quiz, and would also vote for more time, still....just was enjoying my brain crunching, and wanted to keep going, alas time ran out.

Would have been good to have an example in the introduction so we have an idea what a phrasal homophone pair is. And worships and warships aren't homophones in ANY dialect that I've heard. But apart from that, awesome quiz.

Shayxin is right - it would be one thing if a significant chunk of the population pronounced "warships" and "worships" the same way, but it's pretty hard to believe that's the case.

There's always accents, but that's be horrible. How about how it SHOULD be pronounced and if it's close enough. Worships and Warships should NOT be here. Chants are necessarily hymns - in fact plenty of chants are NOT hymns. If we were to go by "Oh, it sounds the same in some dialects," it'd be AWFUL! The things I hear where I live . . . Note that I do NOT agree with any of these, but I hear them ALL the time. "liberry" lint=lent arthur=author ax=ask misses=missus There are TONS more.

Okay, so there's a huge backlash over "worships" and "warships" but honestly, no matter how hard I try, it's really hard to say them differently. I will take it off, but note that I firmly believe it deserves a place on this list. Keep your eyes open for Phrasal Homophone Pairs II, by the way! It's in development...

Really enjoyed this. Surely we all accept that all homophones differ according to accent or dialect. A Scot might not say what and watt the same way but I would still say they were generally homophones!...Remember that there are Britons, Americans, Australians, Canadians, South Africans etc doing this quiz ...all native English speakers. If we get too picky there won't be any homophones left to agree on!! Thanks marinadelray

Nice quiz! Words that are pronounced the same in any legitimate dialect should be fine. However, I too doubt that worships and warships are pronounced the same in ANY dialect.

Fun, but surely a currant isn't a berry, but a grape? Facts and evidence are not really synonymous either.
