This was cute, but I would pick someone a little more specific, or maybe a better picture, than Beethoven and especially Dolly -- she was hardly one of a kind, right? Whereas DUMBO...:)

For some reason, I couldn't see the right side, so I missed seeing 7-8 and 12-13. Cute quiz, though.

I would remove Fantastic Mr Fox. All the others are either real or appeared first in cartoons, so are sufficiently recognisable. Mr Fox, fantastic though he is, is a literary character and any picture of him is merely someone's idea of what he looks like.

Cute quiz :-)

Why don't people get Laika?
Nov 24th, 2009 at 14:39 GMT
because people aren't from russia. Fun fact of the day: Laika was never intended to return to Earth and never did.
Nov 24th, 2009 at 20:27 GMT
I had no idea on the sheep, so I typed in Dolly off of pure chance. I was shocked when it actually worked.
Nov 24th, 2009 at 21:51 GMT
@Eurythmech: I think it's because not many people nowadays have heard of Laika, and those that have, usually haven't seen a picture of Laika.

That's what makes these fun. I got Laika, but had no idea about Simba even though 95% are getting that one.

I couldn't remember her name! I tried Lenka, Linka, Layca. Then I tried dog astronaut. Could we accept dog astronaut?
Nov 26th, 2009 at 10:14 GMT
@raathman: technically if anything Laika was a cosmonaut!

@lupin, you've missed my point. Apart from Mr Fox, all the pictures in this quiz are the first (definitive) incarnations of these characters. Mr Fox first appeared in literary form, and his image in the new film is just the animator's impression. What about the images of him by Roald Dahl's illustrator, Quentin Blake? At least Dahl was alive when they were made, so I can't see how an image of Mr Fox can be definitive. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/reader/0141322659/ref=sib_dp_pt#reader-link

I tried just about every spelling for Laika apart from the right one! I also tried "Mr Fox", but apparently that wasn't good enough. Ah, well, 18/20 is respectable enough.
Nov 26th, 2009 at 21:07 GMT
chrispaz: you're wrong. Bambi was a book first. Puss in Boots is a French fable.

i agree with chrispaz. i loved mr. fox as a kid and i had no idea who he was in this quiz. you should use their most recgonizable forms in the quiz
Nov 27th, 2009 at 23:56 GMT
I think people may not be getting Laika because the picture looks like a cartoon dog (at least it does to me). Are you sure that the sheep isn't Maa from the Babe movie?
Nov 28th, 2009 at 17:46 GMT
I cant seem to see picture 8 and 12 for some readson, but good quiz.

gqb and JT007 - my screen has the same limitation, but i pointed this out on another quiz and the author and her buddies criticized me instead. any ideas how to fix this (the screen thing, not the criticism)?
Nov 29th, 2009 at 01:36 GMT
nitpicker: let's get some information from you and we'll see what we can do. (1) What operating system are you running - Windows XP/Vista? Mac? (2) What browser are you using - IE7, 8 or 9? Opera? Safari? Firefox? (3) What is your screen resolution (not monitor size) - if you're running Windows click "Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display > Settings" and tell us what the Screen Resolution is set at (e.g. 800 by 600 pixels, or 1028 by 800 pixels...)?
Nov 29th, 2009 at 03:20 GMT
@downfall - thanks for the offer. i'm running Windows IE7 with 1440x900 resolution.
Nov 30th, 2009 at 00:50 GMT
nitpicker: I was sure it was going to be something to do with your monitor, but yours is a larger resolution than mine. Suggest upgrading to IE8, or better yet getting yourself the Firefox or Opera browser. If that doesn't help, maybe we should ask the Sporcle people if they have any ideas. For the record, the images are fine with me on Win XP / Firefox or IE8 / 1360x768px. Let me know how you get on with a new and/or upgraded browser.

downfall - thanks again. I appreciate your taking the time to help.

The image I'm seeing is only 575 pixels wide, so it's strange it would be too wide for some people.
Dec 7th, 2009 at 01:30 GMT
I had the right side "cut-off" issue as well, but I was able to see enough of the characters to make a guess - Bambi's butt, Judy Garland's head and Roger Rabbit's clown shoe!
Dec 8th, 2009 at 18:45 GMT
It's a shame that so few people recognize Toto. While originally a novel, practically everyone knows him from the movie.
Dec 10th, 2009 at 20:43 GMT
Good quiz! I only missed two! @chrispaz Before making some comment, make sure you know what you're talking about! Toto was in literature before the movie was ever made! Roger Rabbit was in literature before the movie was made! I'm sure there are other characters that were literature first. You made yourself look REALLY dumb. (Maybe you are, I don't know, but that's how you made yourself look!)
Dec 14th, 2009 at 00:09 GMT
i think more people would get toto if they could actually see him. i got it just cuz i recognized dorothy's outfit. and bambi's butt.

Number 7 and 12 are cut off, plus it's Puss N Boots so it should be accepted.
Jan 4th, 2010 at 06:45 GMT

u should make us do it in order
Feb 24th, 2010 at 23:09 GMT
The description and rules for this quiz are unclear. We're being asked to name the characters shown, not the animal. Otherwise "dolphin" or "collie" would be accepted.
