In cases where syllable count is uncertain (due to pronunciation or name) I've accepted alternate answers. Continental landmasses excluded for "Islands" category.

"Tokyo" is 2 syllables, just like "California" is 4.

I always pronounce the -ia endings as one syllable. If sometimes it can be pronounced as two, then shouldn't Indonesia be acceptable as 5 syllables (ahead of Ethiopia)?

Good quiz. One correction though: Banks Island in the Canadian Arctic is much larger that Crete (or are you counting "Island" as part of the name?).

All the sources I can find, including the Wikipedia article, say that Nauru is three syllables: Nah-oo-roo.

@NYCub - The English pronunciation (at least in my register) has three syllables. But in cases like this I've also accepted the next possible answer for that number of syllables. @AlexRandom - I'll add that as an alternative. @superball - Yeah, I was counting "Island" as part of the name. @zufyoip - Thanks for the correction.

How about Buenos Aires (Bue-nos Ai-res) for 4 syllable capital?

Yeah, I don't know anyone who pronounces Buenos Aires with five syllables in English.

Why isn't Australia counted as an island? it's slightly bigger than Madagascar.

@hilco and masaeaida - Buenos Aires is definitely four syllables, but Santiago is more populous. @wingedocelot - For the purposes of this, I counted Australia as a continental landmass, not an island.
