Also, depending on what you consider the official date, the Confederacy ceased to exist sometime between April 9 and November 6, 1865. I think your date of 1870 comes from Texas' restoration to the Union, but it was still under the control of the US from 1865-1870, it just hadn't yet been readmitted as a state.
