Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Ford (Gerald Ford) one syllable?

Let the record show that there are now 3 quiz contributors who consider Laos one syllable, as opposed to only 1 who says it's two syllables. Debate over?

@gwukelic - That was a total oversight on my part. Thanks! @BombaySapphire - I actually had to go to Wikipedia and click on the audio pronunciation guide to make sure, but I've definitely spent my whole life with "Laos" as a homophone for "louse."

Great quiz and 5 orbs. I always thought that Laos is pronounced as lay-os, but I have heard people say that it is pronounced as lou with the 's' being silent. I do think that you are correct that Laos is one syllable.

Missed only 2. Great quiz! I've e-mail puckett86 telling him he should make this an Editor Pick.

This was a great game. I think I will play it some more, then I will go for some lunch with a nice long drink. Oh Dear, I am now stuck in a one sound words mode......Well done by the way....

Iron is monosyllabic in some accents. The Cambridge Advanced Learners dictionary says it's monosyllabic in the USA (with the O not pronounced) but disyllabic in the UK (sort of i-on). I think it depends generally on how you pronounce your Rs. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/iron?show=0&t=1297603319 http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/british/iron_1

great game (though being from the UK I'm not so familiar with presidents) but not enough time. I hadn't even begun to do any serious thinking and the time was up!

@pottedstu I'm prett sure that most people in the US use both syllables. A monosyllabic pronunciation seems quite rare.

@pottedstu - I have read that some dialects say "arn," but what I've heard in the US my whole life is "I-earn." Thanks for playing, all!

Yeah, I didn't realize until I saw the ten second flash that the quiz was so short. I hadn't even looked past the presidents yet. Great quiz, I would just like a tad more time.

"Laos" can be pronounced as two syllables, but it's usually pronounced (at least in the US) as one syllable--like "louse."

According to my dictionary, while Laos can be pronounced as one syllable, the preferred pronunciation, and the one I've always heard used by broadcasters, is as two syllables with the accent on the first syllable.

I think Laos is technically a diphthong, which is really one longish vowel sound - so CVC - one syllable. I'd go with the creator of the quiz on this one. (I still didn't get Laos!)

I missed Laos also, and I've heard it pronounced both as one syllable and two syllables. Dictionary.com and Wikipedia both say it can be pronounced either way. I would turn it into a bonus answer if I were you. Great quiz either way! The blitz made it so much more fun. If a few more minutes were added it would've been easier, but the time crunch makes it more enjoyable

Iron is two syllables unless you come from the Southern United States. Then, and I believe only then, is it "Ahrn."

Agree with the above, I don't see a need for this to be a blitz. It's enough of a challenge to come up with all of them, particularly the countries, presidents, and elements.

Not nearly enough time. :( Like the concept and I was sorry I didn't notice how low the time limit was to start with or I would've unchecked the "show me missed answers" box and tried again.

joeplus - yes, Guam is one syllable but it's not a country (or anything else listed in this quiz) so wouldn't feature anyway.
