For countries with common abbreviations, I used the abbreviation if it had more hits, except in cases where the abbreviation was clearly getting hits for an alternate meaning.

Some surprising results here I must say. Lithuania?

Belize but not Brazil? Slovakia but not Spain? Iceland but not Italy? Weird.

I got the whole top 10 plus numbers 14 and 15. I have to say I'm completely shocked at all the others being on there.

Steelwolf: I got the same as you + Morocco and Uganda as wild guesses then gave up. This list is absolutely bizarre!

This is truly a bizarre list. When I started making it, I didn't think I'd have to actually Google all the really obscure countries, but then when Bahrain started breaking into high ranks I realized it wasn't that straightforward. @HiddenPalace - One reason the three you mentioned might not have made it is becasue they're called something else in their native language. But I'm just guessing at that.

Slovakia and Iceland are called something else in their own language: Slovensko and something very weird for Iceland :p

Erhm, Google total hits are far from constant due to the weird mathematics going on behind it.
For example: I got 107,000,000 results for Nicaragua, not 499,000,000. Nice idea, but sadly impossible to execute.

Does "cases where the abbreviation was clearly getting hits for an alternate meaning." include CAR?

Some of these probably are searched for some other reason: e.g. Chad is a common male name, togo could be to-go.

105,000,000 for Nicaragua here. The other countries I got a similar number to yours, but Nicaragua is clearly incorrect.

@various - Nicaragua removed. I think MathijsP is right, these are very inconsistent. I might make the list much shorter if people keep finding big problems. @cuendillar - Yes indeed.

Cut down to the top 10, which seemed to be a rough line before a long set of countries whose presence on the list seemed to mean very little.
