Please let me know if I missed any countries. There wasn't any easy way to figure this out, but I tried to be as thorough as possible.

Hi - liked the idea of the quiz, but I reckon there are a few missing - Germany gets its coast cut by Denmark, Saudi Arabia speaks for itself, Oman and UAE have some interlocking territories, and Bosnia Herzegovina splits the Croatian coast (not far from Split - I like that).

Great quiz. I love your attention to detail in the instructions.

And Israel - it has a coast on the Red Sea.

You're missing Brunei. Brunei has two parts, separated by Indonesia.

Really nice quiz! Besides the corrections ButtercupSausage mentions, Morocco should be on, as it's split by Ceuta and several other Spanish exclaves; and Spain is split by the UK (Gibraltar) as well as by Portugal.

In summary of what has been said so far, you have missed Croatia, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE and Israel. In addition to that, Morocco's coastline is divided 3 times by Spanish territory and I feel Turkey should count since its coastline is split by Georgia, Russia, Ukraine, Romania and Bulgaria. Also Indonesia because of Timor Leste.

(I guess some of the corrections suggested are ones you were excluding as landlocked/inland seas, though.)

That would mean that the quiz maker has mistakenly labelled the Black Sea (or the Mediterranean) as a landlocked sea, when it isn't. I've been doing a bit more reading, because I heard recently that Peru granted Bolivia some coastline (near Ilo), and therefore, Peru should qualify for this quiz too. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-11595368

I should perhaps have mentioned Timor Leste as a missed answer, not just the reason for Indonesia to be included... I only realised that when phildm pointed out that Brunei should be in there (however, Brunei is divided by Malaysia, not Indonesia).

Great idea, nice quiz. Argentina appears to be split by Chile right down at the bottom there.

Nice idea, but better research is needed, this many omissions of perfectly valid answers makes it a poor quiz.

I hope you realize now that your research was hardly thorough (a simple look at a page of exclaves would have given you most of the missed answers), but your quiz question is very good. It resembles one of a few months ago: countries whose borders aren't continuous. Pretty much the same answers, except for countries with borders on different landmasses and enclaves, so this one is a lot better.

@All - Thanks for the help. I really didn't predict that this quiz would be so incomplete - I knew there would be omissions, but I apologize that there were so many. A few countries mentioned that I haven't included: Turkey. Either 1) Turkey is in two parts, in which case the single landmass criterion wouldn't apply, or 2) the Black Sea is landlocked. (I believe 1 is correct.) I also haven't included Chile because as far as I could see the interlock with Argentina only occurred on islands, not mainland South America.

On a related note, would people prefer an easier version of this quiz in which the country that splits the coastline is a given? I would of course drop the time down.

The Black Sea is not landlocked (on Sporcle at the very least - see landlocked countries quiz) and you could say that Turkey is on the landmass of Eurasia (or Afro-Eurasia) on which it has two parts of coastline.

I agree that Turkey should be included, since, as has been pointed out earlier, its two separate parts, while on different continents, are still on the same landmass.

Turkey added. Not sure why I was oblivious to the act that Eurasia is a landmass.

Peru shouldn't be on this list. Bolivia has been landlocked since losing the War of the Pacific in the 1880s. Bolivia has port rights in places like Ilo and access to the sea via the Paraguay River, but that's just trade rights like Moldova has trade rights down the Danube with Romania and Ukraine. So Peru's coastline is one contiguous coastline.

You need to add Chile and Argentina. Also, I think the instructions could be a little clearer, something like 'where the coastline is split by another country', as 'distinct coastline' is a little unclear - it could be interpreted as having coastlines on different seas for example. Good quiz though!

@joebobs - Are you sure about Chile and Argentina? From what I can see, they only interlock if you count Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego and the mainland as one continuous coastline. On the mainland and on the island, the coastlines seem to be distinct. I've changed the instructions to be more clear.

@NinedentLtD - Ireland doesn't count because you could walk the entire coastline without passing through the UK.

India by Bangladesh For one particular class of the trickier divisions (e.g. Cabinda, Ceuta & Melilla), see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enclave_and_exclave and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_enclaves_and_exclaves

India does reach round to the east of Bangladesh, but not as far as the coast. So no, it doesn't count.

You're right; shows you need a large-scale map to determine these things. There's a border between Bangladesh and Burma/Myanmar that extends to the coast, so you can "walk" the entire coast of India on Indian territory from the Pakistani border to the Bangladeshi one, at least since India took over the French and Portuguese enclaves of Pondicherry, Yanaon, Karikol, Goa, Damão and Diu.

Now I'm wondering which of these are tricoastal - the ones I've found are France (by Spain and Monaco), Morocco (by Spain and Spain), and Russia (Black Sea, Arctic, and that little Baltic piece by Lithuania.) Are there any others?

^^ Russia has four; they also have another Baltic coastline at St. Petersburg (I assume you were referring to Kaliningrad.) The USA is tricoastal as well (Pacific, Atlantic/Gulf of Mexico and Alaska.) Spain has three too; Portugal and Gibraltar interrupt their coastline. Malaysia has three (only counting on Borneo; two pieces of Brunei interrupt it.) Saudi Arabia has three; they are interrupted by Yemen/Oman/UAE and Qatar.

Cyprus could also possibly be a bonus in here because of Akrotiri and Dhekelia; I'm not sure of their actual status other than that they're not part of the UK but rather a dependency, hence the bonus part.

Spain should include being split by Morocco. Ceuta has a water border, and so does Melilla, and the two are not connected except through Morocco.
