Living through the disco era will, I figure, be worth several millennia off of my time in purgatory. Still, this quiz illustrates how many absolutely brilliant pop songs by (at the time) lesser-known artists fought through the thunka-thunka drumbeat to squeeze into the Top 40 -- "Driver's Seat", "Romeo's Tune", "Girl Of My Dreams", "ISRGOWH", "Dreaming", etc. Pure pop songs had to be extraordinary to gain any traction during those bleak years, when virtually the only thing on the radio was dance music or songs by established superstars. Did I say millennia? I meant eons. Ugh.
BTW, special props for "Girl Of My Dreams", which proved that a good songwriter could take a completely perverted, NC-17 rated concept and turn it into a beautiful, bittersweet and downright poignant song. One of my faves too, @caramba. |
