| Afghanistan is a moderate landlocked country of about 251,000 sq miles with a population of a little more than 26.5 million people which is approximately 106/107 people per sq mile. The nation borders China, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, and Pakistan; and the Khyber Pass near its eastern frontier with Pakistan has historically served as the prinicipal gateway between Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. The area was once a part of the Persian empire in the 6th century BC until it was later conquered by Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC. Hindu influence then entered with the Hephthalites and Sasanians until the religion of Islam became entrenched under the rule of the Saffarids, hence the official religion today is Islam. Also, its official languages are Persian and Pashto, and its official currency is an afghani. About 4,750 afghani is the equivalent to one US dollar. OH! And there was no official government until April of 2002, and the president since June 13 of the same year is Hamid Karzai. Just saying! :) |
