Comoros, republic of the congo? Cote d'Ivoire shouldn't be a bonus answer... it's the country's real name

Why is it that we call Ivory Coast the French Name Cote d'Ivoire when we call almost every other country by its english name? I have never figured that one out.

@eja82&leppyfresh: Because the government of Cote d'Ivoire prefers it that way. They officially discourage calling it anything but the French name.

Man I just passed right over Republic of the Congo thinking it has a lot of letters so it must have an 'A'. Luckily, I came back to it in the end and had an epiphany.

@Toby_1919: It's actually both. Rep Congo is on the north-western border of Dem Rep Congo. Like there is Republic of Korea and DPR of Korea, and PRC and RoC.

And to think, 40 years ago there would've only been 7 countries on the list. Three of the countries* were still colonial possessions in 1970 while Cote d'Ivoire was still officially Ivory Coast and Benin was Dahomey.
*Comoros gained independence in 1975, Djibouti in 1976, and Seychelles in 1977.

The country name is Democratic Republic Of The Congo and that contains an A. Cǒte d'Ivoire is the offical name of the country so not accepting Ivory Coast is fine IMO. Please don't think I'm being another word for a donkey starting with the letter A, I just think it needs a little tweaking, otherwise, great game.

I looked at more than one country as I typed it in wondering why it wouldn't accept it. Don't know why I can't see A's today. Why won't it accept Sierra Leone? Cape Verde? Duh...

Since when have the Seychelles been in Africa? I thought they were in the Indian Ocean, you know, sort of near the Maldives and Sri Lanka and that. Not particularly close to Africa.

@dripsey3: read previous comments. @XiscoKid9: since Madagascar is considered part of Africa, so are the Seychelles (they are located right above that island). See a map. :) @CradleofMexicans: Yes. The Arabian Peninsula is considered to be part of Southeast Asia.

Hooray, 12/12! Almost missed Cote d'Ivoire, but remembered the French spelling at the last second. But if Ivory Coast counts, shouldn't Guinea count, since its French spelling is Guinee? And Togo is Republique Togolaise... perhaps it should be removed.
