	i had never noticed that there are a lot of discrepancies between what the CIA recognizes as countries and what Sporcle recognizes. this is not a criticism because i doubt there is an international consensus. FYI, according to the CIA, the vatican city is the 3rd least populated and tuvalu is the 15th least populated.

	Baltimore has a population of 650,000. Belize, Barbados, and Iceland combined have well more than that. The Baltimore metro area does have well more than these 25 countries, however.

	I got all but Monaco. I was surprised Brunei and Malta beat out Belize and Iceland. I did not think of that one surprisingly.

	I love the geography games! I only missed Belize and it made me mad. But I like how sporcle does opposites e.g. most populous and least populous.

	@Carabma: The English-language name of the country is 'São Tomé and Príncipe'. Both parts are needed, just like all the other 'and' countries. And there's no reason whatsoever to accept 'et' — the people of the República Democrática de São Tomé e Príncipe speak Portuguese, not French.

	@Bartleby: You misunderstand: the CIA World Factbook lists many overseas dependencies that aren't countries but it never claims that they are countries. So, if you follow the link from the source list to the Pitcairn Islands (population 48), you'll see that the header says Australia-Oceania :: Pitcairn Islands (Overseas territory of the UK) Unless I made a mistake in filtering out the non-countries, this list represents the world's 25 least populous sovereign nations.

	@Kazbar: Singapore is basically one big city; Iceland is a freezing cold island where you can hardly grow anything and you have to go out in the ocean and catch fish or starve.

	@davidr: Apparently you never memorized the (actually true for once) mnemonic in school that Iceland is green and greenland is icy. Iceland actually has a fairly moderate climate, just slightly cooler than England because ocean currents keep the temperature relatively stable all year around. "Freezing cold" has nothing to do with not being able to grow anything - it's rocky there: you describe it like a third-world country. Oh, the geothermic energy also makes it warmer than it would be based on climate alone.

	If this was top 23 least populated countries I would have got them all! The capital of Iceland is huge (I thought) but turns out that is it, no one else lives there.

	25/25 :) Shocked that solomon islands wasn't on there. Kept trying it but to no avail. Belize was just a guess after running through the rest of the central american countries. Comoros, Maldives and Seychelles surely can't be far behind this lot!

	@chanman: Oops. I meant to say that you had to go and catch fish or starve. Obviously, nowadays, Iceland has a well-developed economy and overseas trade is so much easier than it used to be.
