| This list is terrible. The Notebook is number 2? Over Schindler's List and Requiem for a Dream? Sure, it's a sad film, but it doesn't pack the emotional punch of say Mystic River, Sophie's Choice, Saving Private Ryan or Brokeback Mountain. Those movie's are sad because they are artful, well-acted, and don't layer the over-sentimental, "this will be the greatest tear-jearker ever" nuances that most of these listed movies possess. The sadness from the films I mentioned comes out of reality and humanity (or lack thereof), not out of Nicholas Sparks' contrivances. There are a few that do deserve to be on here (definitely not ranked as low as they are), but the majority are just melodramatic schlock! |
