| It's a great idea for a quiz well-executed, although I'm not sure about VII*VII = IL. I think the answer should be XLIX, because you can't put a I in front of anything greater than a V or X. (In the same way, X can only go in front of L or C, but not D or M.) I think that this is perhaps less rigorously observed in later versions (or has come into favor now that the system isn't used anymore and people have lost their intuitions regarding what makes sense and what doesn't), but I'm pretty sure traditional Roman numerals obey this rule and so IL wouldn't work. If nothing else, "XLIX" should be an alternate answer. |
