Let me know if you think there's too little time. I was trying to make sure it wasn't one of those states quizzes where you actually have enough time to type every single state...but let me know if I went too far the other way and cut it too short.

I liked the time exactly how it is. I like to achieve perfection, but at least have a relative challenge to do so. Got it with 7 seconds to spare, with a few long shot guesses. Keep the alphabetical too.

I didn't even notice it was alphabetical or I might have gotten the two I missed. I got hung up on the east coast and missed Colorado and NM. The time is right - otherwise, someone could just start randomly listing states.

Your source information is incorrect. Florida also has Miami and Tampa

I think the time is good. I missed two but I spent the last 10 seconds trying to think of them, so I think it works. I would also un-alphabetize them - makes it a little too easy to guess. Great idea for a quiz!

@springybawb: No, it's not. Miami has a population of about 400,000 and Tampa is about 340,000. These numbers are from the last census. I even looked on several different websites to make sure. This quiz uses the city populations, not the metro area populations.

i like how you use the actual city populations and not the metros. i dont see an of it on this message board, but a lot of times when people dont use metros, there are a lot of amusing angry sporclers beside themselves that anyone would ever consider not using the metro

Good quiz and good amount of time. I was short four but maybe if I didn't take it at 2:40am, ha. A similar quiz based on metros would be interesting too.

As of the latest Census estimates, Fresno does not yet have over 500,000.

@coulraphobic123: Hmm... Upon doing further research, I see that the first number I had (505,479) was actually the 2010 census projected population. The 2009 number is actually 495,913. Do you think I should use the 2009 number and take it off, or since it is 2010, should I use the projected number? I'm not sure...

Depends I guess...because there are a few other cities that will probably pass the 500,000 mark for the 2010 Census. I know Kansas City, Missouri is really close too.

It's always interesting to see how populations of cities are different in different parts of the country, compared to metros. Boston and El Paso are comparable in actually city population, but Boston's metro is huge, while El Paso's in relatively minor. Of course, Boston occupies a mere 45 or so square miles (which is considered very large by Massachusetts standards).

According to the 2010 census, Atlanta actually has only about 420,000 people. Therefore, Georgia shouldn't be on this quiz.

Regarding Fresno, the actually 2010 Census
does
put the city over 500,000.

@rockhopperlad, an extreme example is Anchorage and Providence. Anchorage has a population of 291,826, much larger than Providence at 178,042. However, Anchorage covers 1,697 square miles, and Providence only 19. Anchorage has metro population of just 380,821, dwarfed by Providence's metro population of 1,600,852. So, sometimes it is more ideal to rank cities by their metro population. This is a good quiz, though.

Here is a non wiki source with an accurate 2010 census: http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0763098.html. Fresno: 494,665. Atlanta: 420,003.

I find it pretty ironic that a New Englander is complaining about using metro areas instead of city limits, when New England cities are among the most under represented by city proper populations.

I typed Louisiana 5 times. I thought I was spelling it wrong. I was sure that New Orleans had 500,000, now that I looked it up. I see it lost population after Katrina.
