The Cassie Bernall story is not true. The actual person who said "Yes" to the question "Do you believe in God?" is named Valeen Schnurr, and survived bad wounds to the chest, arms, and abdomen from both gunshots and shrapnel. But the press wanted a martyr, so they pinned the story on Cassie Bernall.
