| *The Blackhawks became a one-word team for the 1986-87 season. Even though the NHL didn't start until 1917, the Canadiens were around before that time. In 1979, some WHA teams joined the NHL. The current Hurricanes and Oilers went by different versions of their team name before entering the NHL (New England Whalers and Alberta Oilers, respectively). The Canucks became an NHL expansion team in 1970, but their franchise began in the PCHL in 1945. The California Seals/Oakland Seals/California Golden Seals became the Cleveland Barons in 1976, then ceased operations in 1978 when they merged with the Minnesota North Stars, so, technically, the current Stars could trace more names to their history, but I don't believe the team's history recognizes them. Let me know if I missed anything. You're comments are welcome! |
