Pretty questionable choices for number 14(Cousy, Banks), 12 (Bradshaw), 17 (Nistelrooy), 5 (Pujols, Kidd, Robinson, Bench), 4 (Favre, Gehrig), 2 (Malone, Jeter, Leetch), 6 (Musial), 22 (Baylor, Palmer), and 21 (Duncan, Bob Sanders, Deion Sanders, Tomlinson).

Not sure if I would include Brady in the class of these athletes. Bradshaw was a better #12. Oh and so was this other guy...I think his name was Joe Namath.

@olapa12 and jvc: Brady is absolutely the choice over Bradshaw and Namath. Namath had more career INTs than TDs and had a losing record. And while Bradshaw's rings out number Brady's (for now), he benefited greatly from a run-heavy offense and incredible defense. Brady is a top 5 QB of all time (with Montana, Manning, Favre, and Elway or Marino, take your pick) while Bradshaw probably just makes the top 10. Dimaggio is definitely the best choice for now, but I agree, Pujols will pass him soon. However you cannot argue taking out Orr or Russell; both are universally considered top 5 players of all time in their respective sports. Overall I think the list is quite good as most players (and animal) usually come up in GOAT arguments of their sports.

I wasn't really expecting a discussion on the list itself, but there's nothing wrong with that. That's partly what sports is about. Do keep in mind the list came out in '07, so some active players might have made the list, and others might have fallen off. Pujols is definitely making his case, but he's still well in the middle of his career. As for Brady, their main point in giving him the edge over Bradshaw was "for winning in a tougher era." And I agree about Orr and Russell, and Rose ("hit king!").

I'm a HUGE HUGE Red Sox fan, and DESPISE the Yankees. But.. Secretariat over Derek Jeter, REALLY????!!!!

secretariat, if you are counting horses as athletes, was WAY more dominant in his short era than Jeter ever will be. Can you say Jeter was the unquestioned best SS over last ten years? No. Can you say Secretariat is absolutely one of the three best all time in his sport, if not THE best? Yes you easily can. And to put Brady in the top 5, king21, and not manning is just pathetic, go slurp some more chowder and think about it.

Wait, why is there discussion about the choices for each number when the source is Sports Illustrated? To whom are you all complaining?

Dangit people, learn English. Naming a quiz "Best athlete by number" means that you give us the number and we name the best athlete. This quiz should be called "Number by Best Athlete"

@Troublemaker: clearly you didn't read my whole post. If you had, you would have seen that I list Manning immediately after Montana. Yes I am from Boston but I consider Manning not only the superior QB to Brady but the second best QB of all time. So next time before you try to slam someone for being a homer, make sure you actually have something to back it up with.

@troublemaker, you're either an ignorant moron or can't read, considering king21 did mention Manning.

@olapa12 You're an idiot. You can't even begin to believe your own arguments. Ruud van Nistelrooy over John Havlicek? Musial over Bill Russell (arguably the most accomplished player in NBA history)?

Everyone... goes on and on about which player is deserving but lets be honest when we play which one doesn't belong its really Gilbert Arenas who shouldn't be on the list I am certain you can find a better 0.

Guys, it's called "Best Athletes by Number" because that's the name of the list the quiz is based on. The point was just to see how well you remember the numbers of some famous athletes. And I could've put the numbers and had you guess the athletes, but can you imagine what kind of reactions people would have if they tried to enter every guy who ever wore #2, only to find out it was Secretariat?
