The source uses cities with a population of 75,000 or more only. Additionally, the explanation of how they calculate the "score" is found here: http://os.cqpress.com/citycrime/2009/Methodology.pdf I was going to just type it in, but it was way too confusing to calculate; I figured if someone is truly that interested they can just click the link above. Here is the whole site for CQ Press' 2009 crime study: http://os.cqpress.com/citycrime/2009/CityCrimeRankings2009.htm These are the cities that were left out due to nonreporting of statistics to the FBI's Uniform Crime Reports for 2008: http://os.cqpress.com/citycrime/2009/Missing_Cities.pdf

I'm surprised Camden didn't win by even a larger margin. Philadelphia's armpit.

KC would be higher if they included Kansas City, KS.

I figured Opa Locka, Florida would be on there, but I guess the 75,000 population minimum prevented it.

I've never even heard of Opa Locka, Florida. What's it all about?

Opa Locka has the highest rate of violent crime of any town/city in the country; its population is less than 15,000 though.

The fact that it includes rape and robbery makes any of these rankings unreliable. The only crimes reported commonly enough to have validity for this type of ranking are Murder and Motor Vehicle Theft.

As someone who has lived my whole life in NJ, not much scares me. Camden does.

I'm kind of surprised Camden was the only city in New Jersey on the list. That northern cluster of Newark, Paterson and Jersey City ain't exactly the suburbs.

Booker has done wonders with Newark and my little brother has lived there for the last 5 years. It gets nicer every year. Jersey City is a pretty high rent district these days as well.

Never been to Flint; besides knowing people from there, my only point of reference is the movie "Roger and Me". Judging from the film, if you're in Flint you face a serious danger of being filmed by Michael Moore, stalked by Michael Moore, or sold as "pets or meat". I guess that's why I didn't get "Flint" although I got the other 24 with a minute to go.

@ConorONeill: Don't hate. These are some good cities. High crime rates are just part of the story.

@bmo Orlando is a dump. The fact that its got high tourism only adds to its crime problem

Hmm, does the fact that I got Richmond (a wild guess) make up for the fact that I complete forgot about Atlanta? I think it does not.

Here's a list of the bad ones: Nashville, TN La Grange, IL (among other Chicago suburbs) Newton, MA Chalmette, LA Jacksonville, FL Westchester, NY Knoxville, TN Scottsdale, AZ Germantown, TN And all the other bland voids where culture goes to die.

@ dipseydoo...although you have to search for culture in Knoxville, it is not nearly as void of life as Germantown. Germantown is a representation of urban dwellers' worst visions of suburbia.

dipseydoo: That seems like a pretty random list of cities and suburbs that have little to do with each other. I can agree with Chalmette, Scottsdale, and Germantown, but what's wrong with the rest of them? Especially Newton; I've been told Newton is really nice. And also, Westchester is a county, not a city.
