	"54-40 or Fight" wasn't Polk's slogan. Polk had run on the platform that Northerners need not worry about his expansionism because any slave states gained from Mexico would be balanced by free states in the Northwest. But then, not wanting to go to war with both Britain and Mexico simultaneously, he negotiated away modern British Columbia in exchange for modern Oregon and Washington. Polk's critics protested that this was insufficient to balance Texas and whatever other slave states might be seized from Mexico, and that Polk was obligated to demand the whole Oregon Territory: "54-40 or Fight!"
