now, i know i'm nit-picking, but i believe that some of these nicknames do not officially have "the" in front of them while others do. (not to mention that "the" is missing in front of mount rushmore for SD). for example, i'm almost certain that new mexico's nickname is simply "land of enchantment" and not "the land of enchantment", yada yada yada, good quiz nevertheless

Arkansas's official nickname cracks me up every time I take this quiz. As for North Dakota: "The International Peace Garden is a 3.65 sq. mi. (9.46 km²) park located on the international border between Canada and the United States, in the state of North Dakota and the province of Manitoba. Established on July 14, 1932, the park plants over 150,000 flowers each year. Main features of the garden include an 18-foot (5.5-m) floral clock display, fountains, a chime, and twin 120 foot (37 m) concrete towers straddling the border with a peace chapel at their base. The chapel walls are inscribed with notable quotes about peace."

I had trouble with some of these "official" nicknames. I did better with "unofficial" nicknames and slogans. At the risk of being voted down for shamelessly plugging my own quiz, http://www.sporcle.com/games/singin185/rejected_state_slogans

I don't see why waffle35 has been voted down. It is perfectly natural to feel that your homeland is the greatest country in the world and to let people know it. If anyone else feels like saying THEIR nation is the greatest instead of the USA, I may disagree, but I won't vote them down for being patriotic.

After watching the show True Blood I heard a song called the Golden State. Seeing as how that show is set in Louisiana (being Irish and having no clue about any US state nicknames) I guessed that since that song was in that tv show set in that state, Golden State=Louisiana. I got 7 which I'm satisfied with but I didn't get Louisiana (or California). Great quiz, regardless of my lack of knowledge

Interesting. I never knew Illinois had praire. I typed Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Iowa, Arkansas, Oklahoma... It was driving me nuts. Learn something new every day.

@Azazello: My grandparents live in southern Illinois. There is definitely a lot of farmland in that part of the state... As my grandpa said, "There's Chicago, and then there's the real part of IL"

South Carolina should be the peach state, because we make more peaches than Georgia and we have smaller area, meaning we produce the more peaches per square mile than any other state

I live in Pennsylvania and I see "The Keystone State" all over the place. I also knew New York's and New Jersey's nicknames because I have seen them in those states as well. I've worked in Maryland for years and I don't think I even knew what its nickname was before today.

Is there an option to allow you to have multiple guesses for a clickable quiz? It would be nice to see what states you've already successfully guessed, because when you're down to just a few it's hard to remember what's left. But in the clickables I've seen if you get it wrong on the first guess then you don't get to try again, which would be useful here.

Oh, and for those of you who don't believe New Jersey is the Garden State, you probably haven't traveled much beyond the shore or near New York or Phily. The whole interior is forests and farms. It's actually fairly pretty, though no one who hasn't been there believes me.

When has Illinois' nickname been The Prairie State? I thought it was always the Land of Lincoln.
