im an american and i wouldn't want to live anywhere else, but the new formula the UN is using is weird-it just seemed to make more sense when countries like canada, the netherlands, sweden and japan were ahead of us. But for whatever reason according to the UN, I can take pride in america being the fourth most developed country rather than the 12th, which it was in 2009.

You shouldn't obsess over rank. The HDI is all about score. Rank is incidental.

These countries are all generally very high in their HDI - being 1st or 20th is marginal and doesn't mean that all residents of one nation are really more "developed" than those with slightly lower scores. These nations still have social problems and mixes of wealth and poverty.

yeah i know hong kong isn't a country, but its ranked as one by the UN development report, which is why i have china as an allowable answer for hong kong
