Some of these states are clearly on the list due to a single city...

Interesting results. I wonder how many of these people are visiting family or on business and not just there for tourism. Like Michigan, I know it has some great summer resorts along the coast but why would someone from another country, not counting Canada, want to travel so far to get there. The same goes for my home state of Georgia, whenever I see foreign tourist in Atlanta I wonder why the hell they would travel internationally to come visit. It really depends on what defines a tourist and how the data was gathered. If I travel to London on business and decide to visit the Tower of London one night while I'm there how should I be categorized?

Amazing that New York gets more tourists than California. New York City must get more business tourists than San Francisco and Los Angeles (and San Diego and Sacramento) combined.

Even people in America don't want to go to New Jersey....

It says travelers, not tourists - the source specifies the inclusion of pleasure and business travelers, those in transit via the US, and students. That makes most of the results quite understandable.

It's not "amazing" that New York gets more tourists than California. Flights to New York from Europe are a hell of a lot cheaper and shorter than flights to anywhere in California - and a lot of international tourists are coming from Europe. Also, for most visitors to America, New York City is undoubtedly highest on the list of cities they want to see.

New Jersey must get a lot of visitors coming down from New York. NJ also has Atlantic City. and lets not forget about The Situation and Snookie....

New Jersey, could it be simply a data aberration of where international visitors arrive? After all Newark airport is in NJ not NY. That's why I picked it!

Aside from NYC, New York also gets a very substantial number of international visitors to Niagara Falls.

As a Briton, I think a lot of transatlantic flights tend to land in NJ, but most people then go on to NY. As for Michigan, who wouldn't wanna visit Detroit... I love the smell of burning tires in the morning, smells like... poverty!

NJ has beaches and suburbs of New York and Philadelphia...probably most of the overseas travelers are people flying to Newark, as people have suggested, but the proximity to Philly can't hurt.

Given that I would bet that Washington (as a city) would be high on a list of cities, I am surprised to not find Virginia and/or Maryland on this list. Good idea for a quiz.

Interesting. This list obtained data from 2000 through 2008. That means Utah made the list as a direct result of the 2002 Winter Olympics.

yep, probably a lot of the "strange" ones on the list like NJ, Michigan, GA are there because those states all have large airports. i was also surprised to see VA not on the list, especially since it contains Dulles airport.

Utah goes beyond the olympics. I think a lot of foreigners travel the national parks through AZ and UT.

I dont see how michigan is a strange one. And the only reason someone would go to detroit is for the auto industry, and as it turns out that is a lot of lot of people. We're the great lakes state! thats why people come here!

Another thing pushing Michigan up on the list is Michigan State University which I recall reading that it is one of the schools with the most foreign students. Also, the auto industry attracts a lot of business travelers to Michigan all year long from places like Japan, the UK, and Germany.

The South Jersey shore (the ones New Yorkers don't go to) get TONS of Canadians, especially Québécois. Also Cape May in South Jersey gets bird and butterfly watcher from all over the world during the fall migration. Once you get away from New York and Philly, Jersey actually has a surprising amount of forests and farms. It's quite nice actually.

These statistics are probably based on hotel stays, and for those of you questioning New Jersey...there's lots of hotels right across the Hudson River, just minutes from Manhattan.
