Great quiz - amazing how many countries love their red and blue!!
Oct 11th, 2009 at 08:47 GMT
Great quiz! Well done!

I'd thought Qatar would be there. I recall it having a brown-white flag on the flags of the world quiz
Oct 11th, 2009 at 12:07 GMT
nyo: Tough call to make - I'll double-check my source when I get the chance but I'm quite sure it was cited as red-and-white, having the same tribal origins as Bahrain's similarly-themed flag. Wikipedia calls it maroon (which would disqualify it), then in the next paragraph calls it purple (which would justify inclusion). Goes to show how useful Wikipedia is as a source! If the Smithsonian handbook is inconclusive I'll add Qatar as a bonus answer.

I thought Qatar would be on there. This is a difficult quiz unless one guesses randomly.
Oct 11th, 2009 at 20:53 GMT
There is a common theme running through several of the countries, so hopefully the quiz will reward participants who pick up on that. I tried to keep the time limit low enough to stop people beating the quiz by listing every country in the world. The spread of results has been pleasing so far...

Holy smoke. Surprisingly small club. Also I think Bhutan should be moved from a bonus to an actual answer. It's definitely yellow, orange and white.
Oct 11th, 2009 at 22:02 GMT
I agonized over Bhutan for some time (well, a minute or two). To me it looks yellow-white-orange but my source definitely said orange-yellow-"flame red". And I suppose if you're gonna cite a source, you have to stick with it. Orange and "Qatari red" are the bane of my existence!!
Oct 12th, 2009 at 20:56 GMT
Okay I've double-checked and my source definitely says Qatar is maroon and white (apparently their flags used to be a more neuttral red but the ravages of time and sand stained them a deeper red!). I'll put it as a bonus in deference to alternative sources.

3 bonus i got:)

Interesting that all of these contain green. If I'm ever in a position to be creating a country's flag, I think I'll make it the only flag in the world with no primary colors whatsoever. ;)
Oct 22nd, 2009 at 00:49 GMT
Green isn't a primary color, micah
Oct 22nd, 2009 at 03:33 GMT
fun, tough, quiz, especially since my flag knowledge comes from Sporcle and the colors obviously do not show true on my computer. I would have said for sure Oman would be on this list - is what I have been taking for orange actually red?
Oct 22nd, 2009 at 11:14 GMT
Whilst I hate using Wikipedia as a source, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Bhutan has a fairly convincing article cited for Bhutan's flag switching from yellow/red to yellow/orange in the late 1960s.

How about Latvia? Similar situation as Qatar?
Oct 22nd, 2009 at 15:56 GMT
Tough, tough quiz. I got almost as many bonus answers as actual answers.
Oct 22nd, 2009 at 20:25 GMT
Be even better if you had to guess countries without red, blue or white lol :D
Oct 22nd, 2009 at 21:15 GMT
@terriers1922: that was going to be the quiz, but then I realized there were only two, and that excluding only red and blue would give me a nice result set... hence the quiz you see now! :-) @zigra: yeah, the Oman flag definitely contains red. The one on the flag quizzes here at Sporcle make it look like a red dagger symbol on an orange background, but elsewhere it looks like a white symbol on a red background... either way, it doesn't qualify for this quiz. @croissantfever: the Latvian flag contains a darker shade of red, but it is definitely red - as with most flags containing the colour, it represents the blood of those who fell in defense of the nation.
Oct 22nd, 2009 at 21:17 GMT
Oops, I meant the "no red, white or blue" quiz would have returned THREE results!!
Oct 22nd, 2009 at 23:35 GMT
Quiz is missing India and Vatican city. Probably a few others too.
Oct 22nd, 2009 at 23:40 GMT
@firecracker689: the wheel at the centre of the Indian flag is blue and the papal crown on the Vatican flag contains some red - both these explanations are included in the bonus answers, maybe your browser isn't displaying them correctly? Also, I respectfully disagree with your assertion that other flags are missing, as I've revised this quiz pretty thoroughly with help from user feedback. ;-)

secrets I discovered so far: Bhutan (Yellow, white and 'flame red', listed as 'orange' at Wikipedia) India (the wheel is blue!) Qatar (maroon-white, listed as purple in some other sources) Vatican City (a bit of red in the papal crown!)

You definately missed Grenada, green, orange and yellow... no red or blue!
Apr 26th, 2010 at 22:12 GMT
Looks red to me: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Grenada

Aug 29th, 2012 at 22:25 GMT
This one needs a quick update - Libya's flag now contains red!
