Of IU's 8,543,025 volumes, approximately 6,000,000 are instructional manuals outlining the best techniques for... um... "servicing" Bobby Knight. Another 2,543,024 are screeds accusing every other NCAA institution of cheating. The remaining book dates from the time of IU's last men's basketball championship, but is so old that it has nearly disintegrated... a fitting metaphor for the "program" itself!

Funny story- After they built the University of Toronto Library, which is Canada's biggest, the building began to sink at an unexpectedly fast rate. After a while it dawned on them why: they forgot to account for the weight of the books.

@Hejman That's because every member of the Big Ten, except Nebraska, is a member of the Association of American Universities, and Nebraska was a member until recently.

Ivy League, Shmivy League. Though I did go to one of the Big Ten schools not on the list, where for me the library was mostly just a shortcut through campus.

@pator Funnier story: I've heard that exact same story at a bunch of other universities. And apparently so has Snopes: http://www.snopes.com/college/halls/sinking.asp

Great quiz - guessed on most of them (Ivies, big names, big schools, etc), and got them all. Sad to see my alma mater (Dartmouth) didn't crack, but considering how small the school is, I'm not surprised.

I think it would be cool to see a quiz about the largest libraries in terms of size of the building(s) at these respective schools. If the library at Ohio State is an indicator for the size of the library at the rest of these schools, then they are all pretty massive.

@johnlk since ucla and cal are both on this list, I assume it is just counting Illinois U-C

Cal and UCLA are listed separately, as they should be, but it's worth noting that a UC student can access any of these books, they can be moved around. With that in mind, the UC library as a whole, with all the schools, is the most extensive library in the US. Yes, more than the Library of Congress.

I graduated from America's leading engineering school (which is not on this list) and I think I read two books from the library while I was a student. Library size can be a function of what the university teaches; schools that teach talking-about-stuff will have more books, while schools that teach doing-stuff will have fewer books and more laboratories.

This was not terribly challenging (I don't mean to denigrate it, but the subject matter allows educated guessing to take you pretty far--top rated schools plus those with the biggest enrollments will get you most of the way there), ivies, near-ivies, and big state Us. The real measure would be books per student. No service academies? Prob not big enough and little public info available. My tiny undergrad alma mater not there, but my much bigger grad school is, though like DTNelson above, in two years not sure I ever checked out a volume. Some periodicals maybe, and used some hard-copy ref books.....

@johnlk No it's Urbana-Champaign only. Actually, one the first things they mention on campus tours is that the school has the largest library of any public school in the country. Also, (random trivia) since University Laboratory High School students have the same access to the campus library as university students, Uni High technically has the largest library of any high school in the world!

@Pogues. actually University of Kentucky has a massive library. I'm surprised it wasn't on this list, but I don't know if this quiz was based on size, printed material, or size + printed material. Look up Kentucky's library on google images, it's called the "William T. Young Library"

http://www.flickr.com/photos/universityofkentucky/6255063384/in/photostream "William T. Young Library is home to the largest book endowment in the nation, dissertations, federal records, and The Hub. When it was built, it was the only library in the country to house all of its volumes on mobile compact shelves, controlled by the push of a button."

@DTNelson -- That may be the dumbest thing I've heard today. Good to see that custodial engineering requires a degree and a "leading school" with a small library, that you failed to use, gave you a degree. :) Wow!!

@Pogues actually we have the second largest library in the country (Williams T. Young Library) in terms of building size here at UK. Quite nice. I was surprised to not see it on here.

@Pogues In addition to seconding what Stingbass said, we also have the largest endowment of any public university library in the United States. And we actually likely have more books in Kentucky than most other states, since the main east coast distribution centers of Amazon and many other companies are here.
