worldstadiums.com doesnt provide information about the number of stadiums per country. It only lists stadiums for which they have info about capacity/usage

I mean this is a good quiz and all so don't get me wrong, but most quizzes like this are really just "name a bunch of first world countries". I am shocked brazil is so high. I guess a lot of soccer stadiums.

Don't know how the list is decided, there are thousands of football stadiums in the UK.

I agree with adrian96. I'd say there's a few hundred in London let alone the whole of the UK.

He probably counts it the same way he counts the requirements in his recently published quiz. 10,000 seats or more.

@flixuk - From the Oxford English Dictionary: (pl. stadiums or stadia). Either is acceptable.

Look at all of the stadia in the us wasted on what can only be described as mediocre sports where most of the time during the games is not playing sport.

@jonty Are you referring to American football? If you are, that's the main reason I don't like it, they stop every 5 seconds to set up plays... and this is coming from an American. I also don't understand why it's called "football" when they have the ball in their hands over 75% of the time

China should be on the list. It has 149 stadiums based on the source given. Somebody should upload the list.

Strange that Finland ranks so high. If football related (i can only assume) it's strange that Turkey, Poland and Russia, all of which probably have a greater spectator base, rank lower.

The list actually has all stadiums with capacity greater than 3,000 - not 30,000. Also, I noticed that many facilities are double-counted. The Air Canada Centre in Toronto is listed three times because three different professional teams use the facility.

One stadium for every 100 sq miles in Switzerland. That must be where the extra money goes when you don't have to worry about wars.

@Supercamel - it's related to the data available. The smallest stadiums listed for Finland have capacities of 1000 (36 of them). The smallest stadiums listed for Russia have capacities of 5,000. (I'd bet there are quite a few Russian stadiums with smaller capacities than 5,000.) When the smaller stadiums are included, the data become skewed.

The stadium data has been updated- the numbers had changed from when jonesjeffum first put the quiz together in late 2009. This resulted in one country going off the list and one coming on, thus the earlier comments about China. @Mirrorboy- if you look at the archived comments, you'll see that the OED says that both 'stadia' and 'stadiums' are correct. @demonstah- I agree. There's no definition on the site at all for what they accept and the bottom end cutoffs vary depending on the country. There are stadiums listed in the UK that are smaller than some high school football fields in the US.

186 stadiums here in Finland? Hardly. Unless you count every backyard with a basketball hoop.

It was a fun exercise: Nation with relatively large population, generally robust/industrialized economy, soccer fans... That'll get you about 75% right there. Then some variations on the theme gets you the rest of the way. Personally, I think the total number of countries should be increased until K-stan qualifies. Maybe Andorra or Vatican, too....;-)

Mirrorboy, I'm not sure what your post means but "stadiums" is an acceptable plural for "stadium" and is more common in modern usage than "stadia".

The data is a bit suspect. Numerous stadiums are counted more than once, as they have a separate listing for each team that uses the facility. In the U.S., this means some stadiums are counted 4-5 times. For example, an arena in a city where an NBA, NHL, and college teams all use the same facility.

@ClintT13- The stadiums are listed once for each tenant but only counted one time, thus Kyrgyzstan has only six stadia even though it has more listings than that.

I hate to dog on the quiz here, but this quiz is completely misrepresenting the data set. The source never claims to be a complete list of all stadiums. They list what they've had the time and information to include. For some countries they have more and for some less, but it's got nothing to do with the total number of stadiums that the country has. It's just that in some countries they include a bunch of small stadiums and in some they don't. For example, the source never claims that there are only 167 stadiums in Russia. That's just all of the stadiums that they have in their database. But unless you believe that literally every stadium in Russia is over 5,000 we can be sure they have a lot more. It's quizzes like this that make me think Sporcle has gotten too big. Just because there is a list of something on the internet doesn't make is suitable to be a published quiz.
