Re: Islip. It has to do with the term Town in New York. Here, a Town is a governmental entity consisting of multiple small "cities". Cities is in quotes because they're technically called hamlets here. We have cities also, but those aren't located within Towns. The Town of Islip is the governing municipality of about a dozen places that would commonly be known as towns or cities elsewhere.
It's not just Central Islip, West Islip and East Islip noted by eab21. Within the Town of Islip are those three hamlets (that's what we call the "cities" that make up Towns), and also Brentwood, Bay Shore, Sayville, Islip (yes there's an Islip hamlet within the Town of Islip), Oakdale, Bohemia, Bayport, Islip Terrace and Great River and parts of one or two other places.
So the Town of Islip is not directly comparable to Puyallup. A more direct comparison would be any of the hamlets that comprise the Town of Islip. And none of the four hamlets within Islip that end in P (West Islip, Central Islip, East Islip and Islip) are bigger than Puyallup. |
