Good quiz! It would be interesting to see the capacity of each stadium.

If you're not accepting Buffalo for Orchard Park (which is fine by me) you shouldn't accept Urbana for Champaign. They are two different cities.

I was proud of how many college towns I knew...until I saw the stats. The competition for this quiz is as tough as Texas-Oklahoma.

Good quiz, but you should accept Notre Dame for South Bend.

After trying Columbia for South Carolina I figured it was Clemson's stadium and gave up on it because I had no idea what town Clemson was in. Facepalm.

Wow at the colleges. The only people who got Maine without looking it up are from Maine.

@BoL Nope, I got Maine because I started my virtual career there in a college basketball video game.

What do you mean by largest stadium? The Indianapolis Speedway is like 4 times bigger than Notre Dame. And it even lists that on your source.

Schaefer Stadium in Hartford is bigger than the Yale Bowl in New Haven.

@wolfsbro: Schaefer Stadium is in Foxboro, MA, not Connecticut.

1. There's no Schaefer Stadium in Hartford, it was in Massachusetts. 2. It was demolished in 2002. 3. It was NOT larger than the Yale Bowl.

I am utterly obsessed with both football and US geography and even I couldn't get the New Hampshire one. I really enjoyed the challenge this quiz presented.

You should accept Buffalo for Orchard Park. The New Hampshire one isn't too hard - it's Dartmouth's stadium.

Usually major athletic programs use booster money as well as profits from the athletic departments to fund stadium improvements, CoolBeans. But, you know, who needs facts?

@ CoolBeans: Alot of the major D-1 schools make almost as much money from atheltics than they do from tution, sometimes the profits are in the 10s of millions. So are you saying they should cut off most of their funding? That doesn't seem smart. But what do I know?
joeggernaut
:
Jul 18th, 2011 at 19:57 GMT

@bruinsfanatic: Almost none of the D-1 schools make a profit. In fact, of the 119 schools that play D-1 football, only about 5-6 public schools make money depending on the year. (Think big schools with HUGE football stadiums: Texas, Michigan, Ohio St., etc.) Private schools don't have to report their books so how many of those are in the red are unknown. Also, athletic department money is always separate from a university's general fund so people can't complain about tuition rising to pay for stadium costs and a new coach.

Ummmmmm....joeggernaut....according to the US Dept. of Education over 292 programs made profits of at LEAST 100K in 2010 (http://kaarme.com/Most_Profitable_College_Athletic_Programs). All schools (other than a very minor few) are required to open their books in a minor way do to their tax exempt status as a not for profit organization via the tax code. 5 or 6? Profitbale schools is beyond a rediculous guess.

Also, at least 12 schools make profits of over 30 million on football alone...so 5-6 even making money is a dumb guess.

California should be Pasadena now I believe. After renovations, LA Coliseum holds about 93,600, whereas the Rose Bowl holds over 94,300 now.

Further info: War Memorial Stadium in Wyoming, when full, becomes the third largest city in Wyoming. Cheyenne (59,466), Casper (55,316), War Memorial Stadium (33,500), city in which War Memorial resides (30,816). It's also the highest Division I FBS college football stadium in the nation at 7215 feet. (University of Wyoming alum here, can you tell?)
