All that a sporcle quiz should be. Not just a typing exercise, but made you think. Most should be able to start answering, but few will finish - I certainly didn't! Top marks!

Before taking this quiz, the only thing that I knew about basilicas in Buenos Aires was that I got married in one. I didn't know that there were other 14 (let alone that this means the second place in the world after Rome). It's incredible how you learn things in Sporcle, not only about remote countries but about your own city.

@Spelvout: firstly, the Vatican's pretty tiny (just a few dozen city blocks, and about half of it is gardens) so even with a pretty high ecclesiastical density, that's still not room for many basilicas. But secondly, I presume it's being counted in Rome in any case?

Yeah, even if the Vatican were counted separately, St. Peter's (which is a pretty large percentage of its territory) is the only basilica.

They love Catholicism in Italy. It's like a religion over there.

I like that Trapini, a city of 70,000, has four basilicas.

With all those basillicas in his country the Prime Minister of Italy must be an outstanding exemplar of piety and holiness.

Great quiz! I stupidly guessed only U.S. cities for a bit before realizing that the quiz covered the world, not just the U.S.

In the last minute I thought I'd start trying Polish cities as it's the most devoutly Catholic country I've been to.

@Meltha Dublin is a very protestant city. St. Patrick's Cathedral is even a protestant church!

@meltha - although Boston may have a large catholic population the churches there are likely to be lacking in antiquity, historical importance and significance compared with those in Europe in particular.

@swellwrench: I don't think so, Danzig is Gdansk in german and that's not an official name. It would be like accepting Nowy Jork (New York in polish).

@bruzda: Not quite. While I agree with you that Danzig should not be accepted, Danzig was a German city both as part of Germany proper and as an independent city (whose dominant language was German). It wasn't until the late 1940s/early 1950s that the Polish essentially de-populated the city of Germans. New York, on the other hand was never part of Poland, nor has it ever had a majority polish-speaking population.

I knew they would be mostly in Italy, so after I exhausted the cities that came to me easily, I started naming lunch meats- nabbed me Bologna and Genoa.
