Thanks for the priase. I thought I should note a few things (SPOILERS): 1) The Tempest is the only play not included, as it doesn't take place in a real location 2) I counted "Love's Labour's Lost" as being in France, rather than Spain, on the grounds that the real King of Navarre who was the basis for the character in the play only had ruled territories within modern France.

I had no idea that Illyria was a real place - I thought Shakespeare just chose a fictional location for Twelfth Night, like he did with The Tempest.

Micah - what part of Pericles was set in Libya? I was looking at the various locations listed at the top of each scene, and "Pentapolis" was the one I didn't know - the rest were mostly in Greece, Turkey, and Lebanon, iirc. Is Pentapolis supposed to be in Libya? If so, I'll add it.

Yeah, Pentapolis is Cyrenaica, which is in modern-day Libya.

Interesting quiz! But hard to pin exactly. I got Czech Republic for Winter's Tale because I knew it was set in "Bohemia", and that's where Bohemia is, but a scene is set *on the seacoast* of Bohemia, which means it's probably not within the modern-day borders of the Czech Republic! So is it set at a time when the realms of the king of Bohemia stretched down to the sea, and that scene is set in modern-day Slovenia? Or is it just a fanciful fictional location to which Shakespeare gave the real-life name "Bohemia"?

Great quiz. I would include a bonus or two, especially for "Spain" which I tried three or four times, just in case I was misspelling it. :)

Great quiz - how about adding Bermuda as a bonus? Most interpretations seem to suggest that The Tempest is at least based in part on a description of a shipwreck on Bermuda in the early 1600s.

Cool quiz. I never realized Twelfth Night took place in Croatia. I also was certain that some of Hamlet was set in Norway, due to Fortinbras, but I checked my copy & sure enough, all his scenes are in Denmark. Nice job, Johnlk.

In terms of Bermuda, while it is thought that The Tempest was partly based on descriptions of Bermuda, geographically, the island on which the play is set is clearly located in the Mediterranean - the ship is on its way from Naples to Tunis, or vice versa, iirc.

I have alays understood that The Winter's Tale was set around the coast of the Northern Adriatic (now Italy/Slovenia/Croatia) which was briefly controlled by Bohemia. The Forest of Arden is in Warwickshire in the Midlands of England (i.e. close to Stratford-Upon-Avon); however, Shakespeare seems to have forgotten this with his references to France. The suggestion that he meant the Ardennes is quite unlikely.

The Winter's Tale is set in Sicilia (modern day Sicily, Italy) and Bohemia, which is part of the Czech Republic now. If you read some of the forewards in modern editions of the play, scholars say that Shakespeare's "Bohemia" was not geographically correct at all, as he made it a coastal region in Italian lands for purposes of the plot.

Along with Norway, I thought some of Hamlet took place in Poland. But I guess the Norwegians are just on their way to Poland and nothing is actually set in either of those places. Hooray for Pericles Prince of Tyre though!

Well, that's embarrassing. I was just in a production of The Winter's Tale as of yesterday, and I never knew it was set in the Czech Republic. Not a clue!

I'm surprised to see that Shakespeare had such a limited worldview. Almost all of these countries are in Europe. The Western Hemisphere receives no recognition whatsoever?!

fortinbras would argue that norway needs a bonus as it is constantly referred to in hamlet, even if it's not actually used for any scenes.
