No director has ever been more synonymous with his era than Hughes with the 1980s. RIP.

"Planes, Trains and Automobiles" is not accepted unless you use the ampersand? That's...stupid.

I hear he's popular in heaven. The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, ****s, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, dickheads - they all adore him. They think he's a righteous dude.

Sad to see. While I was too young for his teen-based movies, I grew up on his adult/family stuff in the late eighties. Sorely under-appreciated as a writer.

I was shocked to find out he only wrote and didn't direct movies like "Pretty in Pink" and "Some Kind of Wonderful". He also wrote the Vacation movies, as well as "Mr. Mom", "Home Alone" and "The Great Outdoors". He WAS 80s comedy. What a resume.

I feel this doesn't do justice to all the great films he has written and produced. This just shows a brief glimpse of how he touched many people's childhoods. R.I.P. John Hughes.

@Hollie Campbell: This is just a list of what he directed. He did write and produce Pretty in Pink but he didn't direct it.

I can't say anything someone else hasn't already said better... Hughes was a great writer and a great director, and he will most certainly be missed- by me, by people older than me, by people younger than me, and for generations to come. Period.

Oh my gosh I had no idea he was dead! I was like 'Oh, super random' I'm just now waking up and haven't turned on the news, I'm so pissed now. R.I.P John, I lived my entire childhood and teen years out according to your movies.

He gets points from me just for dropping the improvisational weirdness of John Paxton on my consciousness: "How 'bout a nice greasy pork sandwich served in a dirty ashtray?"
