Fun quiz - as these ones always are - but you do seem to have missed out quite a lot of countries that were there in 1945, e.g. Nicaragua, Denmark, Thailand, Greece, and quite a few other small European countries - do you have a source?

http://www.scribd.com/doc/217593/Map-The-World-in-1945. Thailand and Greece are there, I could have sworn Denmark and Nicaragua were also there but I will have to add them.

Ah, thanks. I guess the problem with that map is that it just doesn't seem to include small countries, so e.g. San Marino, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Vatican City, Monaco are all missing despite being independent at the time.

East Germany and West Germany did not exist in 1945. It was still one state although occupied. The countries were founded in 1949.

Vietnam was not recognized as an independent country in 1945 - it was still internationally viewed as a French colony until 1954, although the Viet Minh claimed independence from 1945.

What's up with the archaic spelling for Romania? Your source certainly doesn't use it.

Austria were occupied by the British at the time so aren't included. Romania was spelled with a 'u' in 1945 so that is used, although Romania should probably be accepted as an alternative.
