Make sure last names work for all. "Sinatra" does not work.

The way you list your dates seem very confusing. I think I see what you are doing, but it's seems odd to start a decade before the group ever had a hit or even FORMED a group. For example, Three Dog Night appears over five different decade spans, three of which began before they even formed a group. I was scratching my heads at the Beach Boys being around in 1957! THEN I finally figured out what you were doing--stretching out any decade that fit around the 12 hits. For simplicity's sake, it might be better to NOT figure backwards and initiate decades ONLY UPON ACTUALLY CHARTING A TOP TEN HIT. Not that what you did is in any way wrong, it just doesn't seem to me to make a whole lot of sense to start a "string of top 10 hits" before an artist actually ever had a top ten hit. Just my 2c worth. A great quiz idea, I just found the dating to be very confusing.

@RogerAnthony: Typo, fixed.
@shakirafan: It was an issue. In general, when an artist has multiple decades list, the hits run from the Latest first year to the Early last year. (E.g., the Beach Boys had their hits from 1963 to 1966). But which decade best represents those 4 years? I admit it isn't ideal and am open to suggestions.

@jmsr525: I agree with shakirafan. If an acts 12 hits all fit into a single span of less than a decade, just list the upper and lower years of their top then hits. For example: Three Dog would be listed as 1969-74. Okay, it's not a decade but they had no top ten hits outside that range. Then just append ".. or less" to the title question.
In fact, you could use a single date span for every act, as long as you noted that the act had at least 12 top tens during any 10 year span in that range. That would more accurately list The Beach Boys as 1963-66 (and no other years), The 4 Seasons as 1962-67, Connie Francis as 1958-62 and Frank Sinatra as 1940-52.

Looks waaaay better. You could still reduce MJ to:
1979-1989
1983-1992

'79-'89 is more than a decade, and then I'd have to look at 11 year windows for everyone else. (Here the issue is that MJ had 1 top ten in both 1979 and 1989 so, regardless of how the window shifts, it is the same number).

What a great quiz! Without any choosing by the quiz maker of which artists to include, the definition of the selection criteria forced a wide variety of acts from a wide variety of eras. Brilliant! And I'm still smacking my head over some of the artists that I didn't think of...

Very neat, and as interesting for who isn't on there (U2, Jackson 5, Billy Joel, Barbra Streisand, Doris Day, etc.) as for who is.

You can make a very persuasive case for Boyz II Men to be on this list. They have 11 top 10s from their first 3 albums and the Remix Collection plus "One Sweet Day". "One Sweet Day" was cowritten with Mariah Carey. The dicey part is the with credit. On the single it is Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men but on the studio album it is on (a Carey album) Boyz II Men gets the with credit. You could go either way but I would swing towards the former as the Billboard chart has the artist listed as Carey & Boyz...no with.

@drn211: I count 10 total top 10s for the Boyz including One Sweet Day. (Motownphilly, It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday, End of the Road, In the Still of the Nite, I'll Make Love to You, On Bended Knee, Water Runs Dry, One Sweet Day, 4 Seasons of Loneliness, and A Song for Mama.)

@jms...your right. I was counting Brokenhearted (with Brandy) and Hey Lover (with LL Cool J) from the Remix Collection but billboard has Brandy and LL as the listed artists so they wouldn't count.

Good quiz. I suspect most of the surprising number of people getting Freddy Martin correct were guessing random crooners and looking for Dean! I like to think I know a little more about the stars of the pre-rock'n'roll era than many but there are 7 artists on here that I hadn't heard of. Thought of Elvis first but got side-tracked by others and forgot to include him.

Mindbending! I can think of Michael Jackson and Guy Lombardo, but Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra don't occur to me. Awesome Quiz. 5 stars.

@karlroberts - according to Wikipedia, Metallica have had 1 Billboard top 10 single & Jimi Hendrix's first appearance in a recording studio was in March 1964.

Rihanna now has 18 top ten hits since 2005 if you need a source: http://neonlimelight.com/2011/02/17/rihannas-sm-rockets-into-top-10-cee-lo-gets-grammy-boost-on-billboard-hot-100/

@Fruity: I count 15 main artist top tens for Rihanna and 1 sometimes listed as a featuring some times with a "+" (Run This Town). I would not include Live Your Life or Love the Way You Lie in my tally as those were clearly listed as "featuring Rihanna" tracks. Others may count them differently.

please let me know where you get all this great music trivia jmsr525. I run a small trivia company in Maryland and my hardest questions to make are multi-answer music questions.
