Lot of work must have gone into this - nicely done, 5/5 from me.
Mar 14th, 2012 at 15:29 GMT
Put this in 5 columns so we don't have to scroll.

I wonder what is the least number of 3-letter sequences to fill in all 196 answers. Can someone a lot smarter than me figure this out? Please and thanks.
Mar 15th, 2012 at 01:35 GMT
My god this must have taken some time to make! Well done indeed.

Amazing how this quiz makes you think...it never occurred to me that Rwanda and Norway both have an "RWA" in them.
Mar 22nd, 2012 at 04:15 GMT
Need to add South Sudan...Good idea.

Fun quiz. One of those where halfway through panic sets in once I realise it's not as easy as it looks...
Mar 26th, 2012 at 14:30 GMT
@dan144556, it just means you haven't been around Sporcle enough. There's at least 1 quiz where they give you 3 letters and you have to find all the countries that include them. Try 'STA'...

Like this one!!!!!!! Big 5 to you!!!!

Thanks to 'and', 'tan', and all the -ia endings!!

I'm going to assume that what kills a lot of people isn't trying to remember countries, but trying to work out the most efficient method of completion without watching the clock.
Mar 28th, 2012 at 04:33 GMT
This quiz sure LOOKED easy...yet I see two obvious combos I completely missed.
Mar 28th, 2012 at 04:41 GMT
Yup, sure am getting more answers right in this quiz than the world countries quiz. Makes spelling all those hard ones, oh so much easier, especially all in Africa and the Middle East.

Brilliant quiz. I can't even begin to imagine how long it took to add in every 3 letter combo!
Mar 28th, 2012 at 05:54 GMT
nothing like a quiz where Solomon Islands and St. Vincent are in the top 10 most guessed

When I entered "EG" (without a third letter) it triggered "The Gambia" (I was going for "EGY"). Minor kink, awesome quiz regardless!
Mar 28th, 2012 at 07:23 GMT
Only got 111. Thought it would be easier.
Mar 28th, 2012 at 07:29 GMT
Fab quiz. Love not having to write out Bosnia etc.
Mar 28th, 2012 at 07:48 GMT
An interesting variation. Enjoyed it.

Isn't it amazing how quizmakers, after five Sporcle years, can still turn out an original challenging geog. quiz. Congrats jmsr525
Mar 28th, 2012 at 09:06 GMT
@kloddz- i think because sporcle recognizes "E-space-G" as in the letters in "the gambia" without a space, so typing EG would trigger the same thing as if you typed in "e g"

171/196. The clock makes this game. Excellent. Yes, it must have been an enormous amount of work to create this!
Mar 28th, 2012 at 12:27 GMT
Surpised that typing in "qat" and "dji" only got me one country for each :)
Comment below threshold:

Curious how Micronesia popped up when I entered "sta"
Mar 28th, 2012 at 12:59 GMT
Time to fess up. This turns out to have been a pretty easy quiz to write (hence, the mess up with The Gambia which should get fixed). I was working on my #1 Hits by ANY word quizzes (again, ripped off by me from the fantastic @MSUKent) and I was wondering how to convert that idea to the Countries of the World. It seemed that 3-letter sequences was the best way to do it. After that, it was just using Excel to make the letter list (text to columns + concatenate and then concatenate again). In truth, the hardest part was getting the official Sporcle 196 country list. So thanks everyone.
Mar 28th, 2012 at 13:38 GMT
@Tony_A: Micronesia's full name is "Federated States of Micronesia" which is why I assume "sta" was accepted.
Mar 28th, 2012 at 13:39 GMT
@Tony_A: Was about to post the same thing, i.e., STA gives you Micronesia. Must be a glitch in an otherwise terrific quiz.
Mar 28th, 2012 at 13:55 GMT
so glad to not have to type democratic republic etc
Mar 28th, 2012 at 13:58 GMT
EL (space) and ELS didn't work for El Salvador.
Mar 28th, 2012 at 14:15 GMT
Absolutely awesome--really enjoyed this quiz. Really great idea.
Mar 28th, 2012 at 14:39 GMT
Awesome original idea, but I think my brain just exploded all over the monitor.
Mar 28th, 2012 at 14:52 GMT
Great idea for a quiz.
Mar 28th, 2012 at 15:28 GMT
@Tony_A and @WCRoentgen: That's because the official name is Federated States of Micronesia. It has that 3 letter combination in the word States. Nice idea for a quiz!
Mar 28th, 2012 at 16:38 GMT
Got Tuvalu, missed France
Mar 28th, 2012 at 17:04 GMT
@Poison76: That's because sequences with a space are omitted (as stated in the game note) :)
Mar 28th, 2012 at 18:32 GMT
I started out with the entire alphabet followed by "ia"; did "tan", "and", "uay" and that got me going. 181/196 on my second try. The clock's still the challenge, there really isn't any time to waste typing ones you already have and then having to delete them. I probably need to study the list to find three letter combinations more useful than initially apparent. Because there's not enough time to methodically work your way around the world.
Mar 28th, 2012 at 19:43 GMT
Any idea what is the minimum number of 3-letter combinations needed to complete the quiz? Or, for that matter, the maximum number?
Mar 28th, 2012 at 19:49 GMT
Maximum is probably around the 190 mark... There are very few which don't have three letter chain that isn't unique. The minimum will take a little more puzzling out. O_o
Mar 28th, 2012 at 20:07 GMT
I think this is more difficult than just guessing all the countries (at least when the answers go on a map)
Mar 28th, 2012 at 21:57 GMT
An absolutely cool game. I love it. I got them all by doing the countries alphabetically so I didn't notice if certain combos gave weird results, but El Salvador and Egypt took many tries but I guess you already know something is screwy with them. bravo!
