@ahamm: The Hot 100 combines airplay and sales, but track only songs. Shania Twain's "Up!", obviously is an album so it wouldn't affect the singles chart. And BTW, "Up!" did not sell 20 million copies. It was certified for 20 million sales by the RIAA, but the RIAA considered it a double album, so each sale counted as two copies. (You may remember, the same songs were on both CDs, one was a country mix, and the other was pop.) Twain herself argued that the sales should only count as a single unit, which is why it took so long for the album to be certified.
Same thing applies to all double albums, so when you see list that show that the Beatles' self-titled "White" album outsold Abbey Road or Sgt Pepper, or that Pink floyd's The Wall sold nearly twice as well as Dark Side of the Moon, keep that in mind. |
