The elevations aren't the highest in the city limits. They're the elevation at some point in the middle of town, generally around City Hall or thereabouts. Phoenix, for example, has several mountains within the city limits. This makes a difference because some big cities include much higher mountains within their limits. The City of Los Angeles, for example, reaches as high as 5,080 feet at Sister Elsie Peak, even though it's only 233 feet at City Hall. Anchorage has an 8,005-foot summit within its limits.

Let me re-phrase: highest elevation within city limits used if mean elevation is below 1,000 feet (e.g. Atlanta). @adamnvillani: thank you for showing need for clarification.

Hmm... thanks for addressing it, but I think it's still problematic, since if you follow the description, Anchorage and Los Angeles would still qualify for the list. Is Atlanta the only one that's on the cusp? I see on Wikipedia that Atlanta's elevation is given as a range. If you check a topo map, it looks like Atlanta's city hall is right at about 1010 feet. I would just go with that and not confuse things with "highest elevation."

I love this quiz. But I don't think of 1,000 feet as high for a US City (just don't picture Atlanta and Pittsburgh as high elevation cities). Maybe 2,000 feet, using adamnvillani's definition. Still, very good and very tough quiz!

Looks like LA should be on your list, as the highest point within city limits is over 5000 ft.

This still needs to be fixed. If you go by the definition given, Anchorage and Los Angeles still qualify. Just say "elevation at City Hall" or equivalent.
