Maybe an extra minute or two. This is a much better type quiz for this format than the presidents, where you just type in a chronological list most of us have memorized.

@cocky: By comparison, I've never learned the presidents in sequence (not required in UK education, I'm afraid) and really must try to do so. But one of the first things I did with Sporcle was to learn the State Capitals in alphabetical order of states, so I was confident with this one. In other words, the format works fine, but we all vary as to what we actually know!

Exactly. Its very hard to come up with a quiz that works perfectly for this format, as there's always a percentage of people who have memorized them in order, and thus are not affected by not being able to see which ones they have already guessed.

It's much easier for me to do this quiz, than it would be to name the states in alphabetical order. I don't find it hard to move about the country naming capitals. When I think of Mississippi it's the state between Louisiana and Alabama, it's not the state that comes between Minnesota and Missouri. Different things work for different people I guess.

I know all the capitals, but never learned them in any real order. I took the quiz and tried to do it in some sort of geographic order, starting in Florida. I got around 40, missing a few here and there.

Really great idea. However, if you select the table with your mouse you can see everything you've already guessed (not that I needed to). Maybe make it so that a different word or phrase appears when you type the answer, but keep that word in white text.

Ha ha! Sorry about that. I put in all those random letters so people couldnt cheat, but then when I tested the quiz I realized that you couldnt tell which ones you missed either. I just changed it back, so I guess Ill just have to trust everyone not to cheat...

@cocky: Sorry if I sounded like I was taking what you said the wrong way. I didnt think you were saying you didnt like it or anything, I was responding to you and WyvernSabres at the same time. All I meant by that was that theres always somebody who has memorized pretty much anything you can possibly come up with.

I have a one where you have to name all the College Football 1-A teams that is done, but unfortunately I only have one quiz left to contribute this month and I am going to use that on the countries of the world one. I was going to make a big 4 sports team quiz but godpaul26 already made one for his "Blackout" series. However I am currently working on making one for each of the individual Big 4 Sports leagues. Thanks again for all the feedback everyone.

In shame must I hang my head, for I forgot Salem; thought of Portland, Eugene, etc., but Salem I'd completely forgotten. Where do I turn in my trivialist badge?

People can still cheat by highlighting the applet...showing which ones you've entered...although the random order helps.

I see what apbuys means. You can enter an answer like this: 1/Austin. Right? Then Austin is accepted, but 1 appears (in white if you like). Cheating is then not possible anymore!

@Pelmert: you're right, but I also see what jmatt22397 means. With a system like that, at the end you would only be able to read the numbers you missed, not the actual answers that you missed (on the stats page). So I think it's best as it is; as they used to say at school, "You're only cheating yourself, you know"!

Revised suggestion: make the word that appears the name of the state, that way you can figure out which ones you missed, but it will be harder to cheat.

Good idea, then you could take a few seconds after the quiz to figure out the 2 or 3 you missed, but it would take a while to, while you are taking the quiz, figure out the 30-40 youve already gotten, so it would pretty much be pointless.

@apbuys: some great suggestions on making this type of quiz cheat-resistant. I'll make use of them if I ever create a quiz of this type. Thanks!

One of the capitals is being displayed as a blank, probably an artifact of all the changes made to the quiz. To see the one I mean just play the quiz, wait 17 seconds, and then Give Up. Then you'll see the blank. It probably has an answer string like "
/
capital
".

Do you automatically fail if you repeat one? Not sure if it can be done, but it would add an extra challenge

The worst part is when you are just sitting there with 2 left and a lot of time to unsuccessfully rack your brain for the remaining ones... :) Awesome idea! I need to learn the 50 nifty song...

Can this be altered so that instead of correct answers appearing in a white font on a white background, they appear as question marks or something? 'Cause right now you can cheat by highlighting the quiz area. I still only got 6 though, but I'll blame that on being Canadian.

There are some Sporcle quizzes where I read the title and then simply type "No." This is one of those quizzes.
