I like the idea of this quiz, but it's tricky to try and cover all the potential answers. Please offer suggestions to help improve the quiz! (off to add Sharpsburg now)

Pearl Harbour, Lincoln and Kennedy Assassinated, 9/11, Stock market crash(es), Gettysburg address, Emancipation Proclamation, Rosa Parks, Boston massacre, Landing on the Moon . . . there's a few that could be added

The list is not mine - it is from a History Channel Series. Their idea was to deliberately choose events that had a big impact but that people don't necessarily think of as momentous.

I'm not sure how mckinley's death impacted history aside from bringing Roosevelt into office

@pengwn and batmann: those events didn't UNEXPECTEDLY change America - they changed it for very obvious and expected reasons...

'mystic massacre', 'McKinley assassination', even 'elvis' should be accepted clues.

"Discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill" should be accepted, as should "Death of McKinley." I would have had those. :/

This is a great idea for a quiz, but there needs to be something more than just the date as a prompt. Otherwise it's "can you read the History Channel's mind?"
