This is very misleading, because it might lead people to believe that the Chinese named some of their animals after Americans...which is simply false. Although "mei" can be used to refer to America (Mei Guo is the pinyin for America), the primary and most commonly used translation of "mei" is beautiful, pretty, lovely, ect. So a jaguar is not an "American tiger" but more literally a beautiful tiger. |
