| @Happ_Hazzard not only are the UK and USA political systems completely different; in terms of land mass the USA is vastly larger than the UK. According the CIA World Factbook, the UK is 243,610 sq km while the USA is 9,826,675 sq km. In other words, the USA is 40x bigger than the UK. It's takes a long time to campaign across the country. Yes it takes a long time, but it has its benefits. The least effective candidates are weeded out, and it allows the voters to get a good look at the candidate before the election. More importantly, the process allows the least populated states to have a relative equal representation in the selection and election process. If we didn't have this system then states such as Montana, Wyoming, Alaska (to name a few) plus the majority of Midwest would be virtually ignored. Only the states with large populations (e.g. California, Texas, New York, Ohio) would decide who gets elected. In the end, at least all the people have a say who is elected. Government coalitions will/can never happen here. Also, I am aware the Canadian government is based on the UK system, and I believe that they too have a specified amount of time for the election process. However, most of the Canadian population live within 100-150(ish) miles of the US border. Canadians, please chime in and correct me if I'm wrong. |
