Nice one. Rhode Island and Vermont were really unexpected, but I guess that's just because of their sizes.

Good quiz. Minnesota was bizarre, I thought they were all vikings. I guess often immigrants will go where there's already people from their homeland, so the population will build up in some odd places, but surely some of these can only be explained by deliberate settlement plans?

Ethiopia to Minnesota has to be a pretty jarring move, climate-wise.

@Geo_Crazy: Actually, Poland does, but that's it. Narrowly missing the cut were Ukraine (#4 in Oregon), Albania (#5 in Michigan), and the U.K. (#5 in Montana, Vermont, and West Virginia).

brilliant quiz. i'd love to see an extended one for the top 5 of each state, no Oceania and only 1 Europe and South America in the top 3s :)

Thanks! Top five was my original intention, but 50 x 5 = 250 answers, i.e. more than Sporcle will allow. :(

i wonder what exactly the rasoning was for those 33 Chinese people to move to Wyoming. equally as puzzling are the 59 Sudanese people who decided South Dakota was for them.

I don't know about other places, but the Somalians who immigrated to my neighborhood were all sponsored by church groups. The churches here brought a lot of refugees and settled them near each other here.

I was surprised about Germany, Ireland, and England not being on the list; Until I re-read the title and realized they meant 'recent' immigrants. My how the times have changed :)

Minnesota and Maine have some of the most generous welfare programs in the US, so groups like Catholic Charities bring Somali and Ethiopian refugees here.

Interesting how many immigrants from Africa are settling in some of the coldest climate states.

Perhaps when you're leaving some very poor conditions in Africa, climate isn't a factor in where you end up.

I found it odd that there weren't any European countries at first, but then I realized that there isn't really any reason or cause for a large group of people from a European country to emigrate to the US, like there is with a lot of the countries on this list.

@Woopee, I'm FROM Minnesota and it took me forever to get the second, and I never got the third. I kept guessing countries where Hmong people are generally from, but I was totally on the wrong continent.

Cape Verde seemed way out of left field for me, so naturally I Googled it, and learned that historically Rhode Island (and Massachusetts) is host to quite a few Cape Verdean Americans. Cool stuff.
