| Agreed that a pair of hyphens is not a true dash and is used where the author cannot produce a dash. At least in the U.S., there is a long history from typewriter days of using two hyphens to represent a dash. As a professional editor, I hold with that and see no reason to ask a single hyphen to pretend it's a dash. Also, FWIW, there are widely used publishing style guides that call for no space before and after a dash, and others that do. |
