| It is officially the District of Columbia, which contains exactly one county (Washington County - the part that was returned to Virginia was Alexandria County at the time), and one city which is now coterminous with the County and the District. At one time there were other cities within DC (Alexandria and Georgetown, notably) but they have either been retroceeded to Virginia, or absorbed into the City of Washington. However, it is, absolutely, just the "City of Washington" which happens to be located within (and contain the entirety of) the District of Columbia. |
