Great quiz! If you can, you should do this for the other years as well (i.e. 2008, 2007, etc.)

Good idea, although with so many cruddy, forgettable movies at #1 it becomes increasingly hard to remember them at all.

I could tell that, as I was getting one movie here and Avatar there, that I would be totally fine with my score of 6 out of 52.

It wasn't a terrible year for movies, it's just that the majority of the population are morons who will turn out in hordes to see the awful ones.

What a crap year for movies. Even some of the bigger names weren't that good of films.

Really? A crap year? Between Inglorious Basterds, Up, Das weisse Band, District 9, Moon, Black Dynamite, Up In The Air, A Single Man, Coraline, A Serious Man, Broken Embraces, Bright Star, Leaves of Grass, Fantastic Mr. Fox, An Education, Crazy Heart, In The Loop, The Maid, Handsome Harry, Get Low, Dogtooth, Madeo ... so many good movies this year. Just most of them weren't Hollywood #1s.

I agree with joker, but it's odd that there wasn't one movie that dominated for more than two weeks. Even the big-budget summer blockbusters, while they made their fair share of money, didn't hold peoples' attentions too long.

Next year, I hope to see a sequel. Already, there were a lot of good movies: Eclipse, TS3, and many others.

It's interesting that even some of these mega hits like transformers and Twilight only spent a week or two at the top of the list. I guess it shows that the real money comes from staying power, how long you can stay as a high grossing movie rather than being number one on opening week.

#1 movies these days are like #1 pop singles a generation ago. A lot of gimmicky output aimed at the youth market. Occasionally a great song or great movie will be #1 on the charts, but it's not the norm. And just like pop music, a lot of #1's will be forgotten, but a lot of lesser box office hits will be remembered.
It wasn't all that long ago when weekend box office numbers were just not known to the general public.

Just proves that things that are popular aren't necessarily memorable... or good. Paul Blart: Mall Cop was virtually ignored in the UK.

"Twilight New Moon" should be accepted as an alternate answer, especially because it's closer to the actual name of the movie. Also, the GI Joe movie is called "The Rise of Cobra," not "Rise of the Cobra."

@ArrogantDuck: was it as heavily advertised as it was in the US? Seems like most of the movies on this list (with the exception of Cloudy) had a lot of marketing/advertising behind them.

I could have gotten a couple more, but I try to forget that Twilight exists. It's not easy, but I have a lot of confidence in my self-delusional capabilities making my world a better place.

If you were to look at the box office number one movies from previous years, even decades, you'd find a similar situation of where many forgettable films led the way. Hollywood studios aren't out to enlighten you or make you think, they're out to make as much money as possible.

Yeah, 2009 was actually an exceptional year in movies, but those movies are usually not the ones to reach #1. As for those questioning films not staying at #1 for more than two weeks, that's just how it is. It's very rare for a movie to stay #1 for 3+ weeks these days, although as you all know Avatar stayed at #1 for a whopping 7 weeks into 2010, the longest running streak since The Sixth Sense in 1999.

...Wow my timer didn't start. I got avatar, Marley and Me, He's just not that into you, district 9, then sat there for 12 minutes trying to think of at least one more, and was astonished to see that I still had 8 minutes left...Then I realized It wasn't counting down

I know people like to characterize the popularity of most of these movies as hordes of morons, but I really don't think that's it. I think it's just a matter of those are the ones that are broad and bland enough to be fourth on everyone's list of things they "would" see, and the only common one. I seriously doubt anyone was dying to see Paul Blart, it was just innocuous enough that all four people could agree on it instead of what each really wanted to see. Having seen almost none of these movies, I can't claim any expertise, but that's my theory on it. Except for twilight...there's still no excuse for twilight.

Hints would help a lot. Main actor/actress,or something.Just guessing blindly,I never would've gotten Obsessed,or 17 Again, or most of the other 45 or so movies I missed. Save Inglorious Basterds,Up and Zombieland,2009 really was bad, wasn't it?
