	actually it's technically derry because the city name was "officially" changed to londonderry but the entire county.. :)

	Always willing to be proved wrong but it was always Derry (or Doire) and got changed to Londonderry when the city was rebuilt using bricks from the London Brick Company.

	The county is Derry and the City is LondonDerry but is often just referred to as Derry. Nothing really to do with British control

	Actually, it's EVERTHING to do with British control-- it was originally Derry, but the Brits decided it would be Londonderry. The IRA (and Sinn Fein and those who support them, but it started with the IRA) popularized the use of "Derry" again in the 20th century.

	CF, Laois was renamed from "Queens County" in 1922, following the war of independence. This is probably why it has it's Irish name

	its known as derry to the majority of people who live here, the only ones who call it londonderry are usually unionist politicians or unionist people who have to try and remember to use the term. its mainly just another way to annoy the nationalist community.

	The Irish Government allows Northern Ireland applicants for Irish passports to use either Derry or Londonderry when they apply for Irish passports. About half a million from Northern Ireland have applied iirc some no doubt from Londonderry.

	Oh, @Veni_Vidi_Vidic, you're just too cute when you're angry. I want to pinch your cheeks and nibble your nasty little upturned nose. I call it Derry, and was happy that it was taken here, but the "compromise" I was taught in school is that the city is called Derry and the county is called Londonderry. (Which, I am happy to report, is an unrecognized word in Firefox spell-check.) That's also how I typically see it in neutral scholarly work. Might that be the thinking here? Either way, thank you for accepting Derry. Maybe do the slash thing -- Derry/Londonderry?

	The county is called Londonderry and came into use in 1613 - see the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland website for details (http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/local_history/areas_regions_and_land_divisions/main_administrative_land_divisions.htm). It is also a little baffling to this half-irishman (father from Co. Clare) that the counties of Northern Ireland are included despite being in a different country.

	They'll be part of the republic soon enough...All of Ireland, regardless of religion should be united. As well, people from all of the counties (included those currently occupied in the North), are able to claim Irish Citizenship and get an Irish Republic passport. As for the 1613 Royal Charter from a foreign power changing a name that had already been used for centuries...what can you say about that?

	Yeah, that's only from 1613. The name of Derry comes from the story of St. Columba ("Doira Colm Cille," or the "Oak Tree of Colm Cille" was its original name), who founded it in the 6th century AD. So, Derry predates Londonderry by almost 1100 years.
