	actually it's technically derry because the city name was "officially" changed to londonderry but the entire county.. :)

	Always willing to be proved wrong but it was always Derry (or Doire) and got changed to Londonderry when the city was rebuilt using bricks from the London Brick Company.

	The county is Derry and the City is LondonDerry but is often just referred to as Derry. Nothing really to do with British control

	Actually, it's EVERTHING to do with British control-- it was originally Derry, but the Brits decided it would be Londonderry. The IRA (and Sinn Fein and those who support them, but it started with the IRA) popularized the use of "Derry" again in the 20th century.

	CF, Laois was renamed from "Queens County" in 1922, following the war of independence. This is probably why it has it's Irish name

	its known as derry to the majority of people who live here, the only ones who call it londonderry are usually unionist politicians or unionist people who have to try and remember to use the term. its mainly just another way to annoy the nationalist community.

	The Irish Government allows Northern Ireland applicants for Irish passports to use either Derry or Londonderry when they apply for Irish passports. About half a million from Northern Ireland have applied iirc some no doubt from Londonderry.
