Thrashers are a type of animal? What about the Chicago Blackhawks?

A thrasher is a common North American bird. The Blackhawks are named after Chief Blackhawk, not a bird of prey, like the name might suggest.

The term 'maverick' can refer to many different things, but it originally was a term for the unbranded range animals of Samuel Maverick, who felt branding was cruel to them. It also made said animals incredibly easy to poach from him. Given that their logo has a horse's head in it, I'd say that's the use they're referring to.

What about the Nashville Predators? Their logo is a cat of some type.

Buffalo Bills would be a good bonus answer, since their logo is a buffalo, but their nickname is not an animal

The rays technically aren't an animal...when they changed from the devil rays to the rays, it wasn't just a shortening of the name. Ray refers to a ray of light, even though they still do have a devil ray on the sleeve of their jersey's. It should be a bonus answer, but not a main answer
