| Your definition of independence is weak, at best. Monaco has been independent since the thirteenth century, with some period of French control. Despite not being formally recognized by France until 1861, it was independent once again in 1815. By your definition, Luxembourg and Belgium should not be on the list because they were occupied by Germany, twice, in the twentieth century. As for Serbia, Yugoslavia was an expansion of Serb territory with a Serb king...and Serbia was the last entity remaining when the other ethnicities broke away. It was a name change, nothing more. |
