So rural poor, indebted and bonded laborers often take pesticide to kill themselves to break out of debt cycles. This happens elsewhere in Asia too, and is on the increase in India, but Lanka has the highest rate. Sri Lanka has good healthcare, etc, so people live long, but the elderly are not taken care of well so they commit suicide. Widows of the recently ended civil war also often committed suicide, not to mention suicide bombers themselves. |
