| A bit of perspective on the names in this quiz and others in the series: The SSA reported 3,933,071 total births in 2011. To get an idea of the number for a "normal" name, the 50th most popular name in 2011 was Aaron for boys and Claire for girls. The total babies with these names were 7,555 Aarons and 4,871 Claires. (Girl's names tend to be more diverse than boy's names.) So if on one of these quizzes you see a name numbered 75 or 48, that is 1/100th as common as a "normal" name; and if it's numbered 7 or 5, it is 1/1,000th as common. In other words, the strange names you see at the ends of my quizzes really are quite rare. Not quite literally "one in a million", but maybe five in two million. |
