In the 1750s, the West End of London was home to a heated rivalry between two competing theaters, the Haymarket Theatre and the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane. According to legend, when Drury Lane's lead actor Charles Macklin boasted that he could memorize any text with a single reading, he was challenged by Samuel Foote, playwright and manager at the Haymarket, who composed this piece of nonsense prose to test the claim.
